Although many of us are not proud of our hair, still that does not mean we want to go bald.  Having a head full of hair is still way better than not having any hair at all.  Since androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness is a hereditary condition, if it is common in your family, most of the times you cannot win against it and simply just submit yourself to it.  However, there is now a prescription medication that has even been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for hair loss, specifically androgenic alopecia, and its name is finasteride.

The truth is, nearly 95% of men that are going bald has androgenic alopecia – a condition that the males in your family can inherit.  Although inherit may seem like a nice word, for this case it is not.  If your dad or your brother is bald due to this, then expect a high chance that you will go bald as well.  According to statistics, it seems that almost 25% of men with this condition will start losing their hair when they become 30 years of age, with nearly 2/3 of those becoming completely bald as soon as they reach the age of 60. Do Not Get Confused with the Two Finasteride Dosage

Finasteride is the active ingredient used in two medications – Proscar and Propecia.  Proscar is intended for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia or the abnormal enlargement of the prostate, and Propecia is intended for the treatment of male pattern baldness.  Both medications are made by Merck as it is also responsible for the research and development of the said drugs.

The drugs Proscar and Propecia both use finasteride as their active ingredient.  What differs however is the finasteride dosage that they use.  The finasteride dosage used for Proscar is 5mg, whereas the finasteride dosage used for Propecia is 1mg.  If you are intended on curing something, it is important not to get confused with the two finasteride dosage so you will be able to buy the generic medication that is intended for what you are trying to treat.  When you are buying branded medications, you will normally buy the trade name of the drug you want and not the generic name being used.  However, if you are going to buy a drug using their generic name, in this case, finasteride, you will also need to know the dosage of the drug you are buying.
